For Amazon-billed Prime, open Prime membership settings, finish cancellation and save the end date. Refund eligibility follows the US Prime terms below. For partner billing, use that provider. Distinguish Prime from standalone Prime Video and other subscription lines, then verify each status.
Before you cancel Amazon Prime
- Finish to the end-date screen — offers and reminders are not a cancel until confirmation appears
- Removing a card does not cancel Prime — complete the membership cancellation flow
- Refund rules are narrow — US terms give a short window after signup/trial conversion, then a stricter unused-benefits test
- Check add-on end dates: Prime-linked video subscriptions stop renewing when the underlying membership ends, but unrelated recurring services require separate checks.
- Carrier-billed Prime cancels with the carrier, not inside Amazon’s membership tools
Amazon Prime cancellations fail for predictable reasons: stopping mid-flow after a retention offer, canceling the wrong Amazon account, or ending Prime while a Video Channel or carrier line keeps billing. The bank statement’s merchant name and Amazon’s confirmation end date decide what happens next.
Cancel Amazon Prime: find who bills you
Cancel Amazon Prime (Amazon-billed)
Sign in to the Amazon account named on the receipt (not a household login that only watches video).
Open Prime membership management from your account or Memberships & Subscriptions. Note the plan, next charge, and billing provider.
Choose the option to end membership or stop renewal. Read each screen for the proposed end date and any refund offer.
Finish every confirmation step until the membership page shows an end date. Amazon may show reminders or offers first — keep going.
Save the confirmation and recheck membership status. If you want benefits through the paid period, make sure that is the option recorded on the final screen.
Cancel carrier- or partner-billed Prime
If a phone carrier or another company collects the Prime charge, cancel through that provider’s account tools. The US refund details below apply to Prime memberships billed by Amazon; partner and country terms differ.
What the US Prime refund terms say
Under Amazon’s Prime terms, cancellation within three business days of signup or conversion from a free trial qualifies for a fee refund, but Amazon may charge or deduct the value of benefits used during that period.
At other times, a full refund is available only when the account has made no eligible purchases or used benefits since the latest membership charge. This is not an annual-only rule, and the terms do not give every renewal a fresh three-day window. Unused time by itself does not guarantee a prorated refund.
If the charge was unexpected, ask Amazon to review refund eligibility promptly and save the amount offered and the case reference. Escalation for disputed renewals: subscription refund rules.
Check separate subscriptions and deliveries
Open Memberships & Subscriptions and Prime Video Account & Settings. Identify Prime, standalone Prime Video, video add-ons and independent services such as Audible. Do not cancel an unrelated service merely because its charge also says Amazon.
Prime Video’s official help says additional subscriptions tied to Prime or Prime Video do not renew once the underlying membership ends. Verify the displayed end date for every add-on you want stopped; separately bought subscriptions and other providers need their own review. To stop a channel earlier, manage that channel directly.
For a Prime Video-only plan, its help directs you to Account & Settings → Your Account → End Subscription. For Prime itself, the same page sends you to Edit on Amazon. Save the result for the actual product you selected.
What happens after you cancel
- Benefits follow the confirmed end date — keep using Prime through that date if that is what the confirmation says
- Refund is not automatic — check eligibility under the US terms above
- Amazon account stays — canceling Prime is not the same as closing the Amazon account
- Verify each subscription line: distinguish add-ons linked to Prime from independent subscriptions.
Still being charged after canceling Prime?
- Posting date versus billing date: check whether a later statement entry is the already-authorized membership payment, a new renewal or another purchase. Access continuing until expiry does not itself justify an extra renewal.
- Unfinished cancel flow — no end date on the membership page means the cancel did not complete
- Wrong Amazon account — Prime lives on a different email than the one you canceled
- Carrier or partner line — you canceled on Amazon while another company still bills
- Another product: match the charge to its receipt and subscription status rather than assuming every Amazon charge is Prime.
Special cases
- Death of the account holder: stop billing at the correct merchant, then follow the executor cancel checklist
- Free trial conversion: record the conversion date on your offer and cancel before it if you do not want paid membership
- Household / shared payment: confirm which account owns Prime before canceling
- Apple-billed related plans: use the iPhone subscriptions guide when an App Store line is involved
- Related Amazon product: Audible is separate — see cancel Audible
Record the dates, not just the button
Before starting, write down the account email, country storefront, current plan, next renewal and last membership charge. After finishing, record the cancellation time, benefit end date and any refund amount shown. Keep both screenshots so support can compare the original state with the completed request.
Example: a page showing benefits until November 8 can be consistent with renewal already stopped. A reminder to return on November 8 is not the same evidence. Reopen membership settings and look for the recorded end date rather than repeating cancellation blindly.
If a refund is offered, check whether accepting it ends benefits sooner. Save the amount and destination and ask support for the expected posting time. A cancellation confirmation and an approved refund are two different records; one does not prove the other.
Country, shared accounts and estate requests
The three-business-day refund rule here is the US Prime policy. Use the storefront and country terms on your own receipt for a membership bought elsewhere. Do not import a US deadline into a UK, Indian or other-country request.
Shared viewing does not identify the billing owner. Ask the owner of the membership to review its settings, and check independent household memberships before removing any service. An authorized estate representative should contact the relevant provider about its evidence requirements and ask for a written end-date and refund decision. Use the estate cancellation checklist to track separate billers.
Cancellation and billing follow-up template
Complete the cancellation in the correct account first. Copy this wording into the official support channel for missing confirmation or a disputed charge; sending a letter alone does not replace the account flow. Keep the case reference, and omit passwords, security codes and full payment-card details.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I cancel Amazon Prime?
Open membership settings in the account on the receipt, finish the cancellation and save the recorded end date. Partner-billed plans use the partner’s process.
Does removing my card cancel Prime?
No. Use membership cancellation and verify status; changing payment details is not cancellation proof.
What is the US three-business-day rule?
It applies after signup or conversion from a free trial. The terms allow a benefits-used deduction. Later refunds use the separate unused-benefits test, not an automatic new three-day renewal window.
Does Prime cancellation stop every Amazon payment?
No. Check each product. Prime-linked video subscriptions stop renewing when the underlying membership ends according to Prime Video help; independent subscriptions and shopping payments are different.
How do I cancel standalone Prime Video?
Use Prime Video Account & Settings, Your Account, then End Subscription. Prime membership itself uses the Amazon membership route.
Can I keep access until the paid period ends?
Read the option and final end date offered for your account. Confirm whether any refund choice changes that date.
Why is another Amazon charge showing?
Match its receipt and billing date: it may be a purchase, another account, partner billing, an unfinished request or a payment already authorized before cancellation.
What evidence helps support review a refund?
Provide the storefront, membership charge, cancellation time, end-date confirmation and case reference. Ask for the amount, payment destination and expected posting date in writing.
