Cancel at netflix.com/cancelplan → tap Cancel → tap Finish Cancellation. Netflix confirms in an email — and its own help page says this is the only way to end the account: signing out or deleting the app doesn’t cancel anything. You keep access until your billing period ends. No cancel option visible? You’re billed through a payment partner (an app store or provider) — cancel there.
Before you cancel Netflix
- Use the right page: netflix.com/cancelplan, signed in as the account owner — the only true cancel path
- Deleting the app does nothing — Netflix’s help is explicit that signing out or deleting the app doesn’t cancel your account
- Time left in your billing period? You keep Netflix until the period ends; the account closes automatically after
- No cancel button visible? You’re on a payment-partner biller (Apple, Google, or a provider) — the Membership section on your Account page will say which and how
Netflix is the rare streaming service whose cancellation is genuinely one page: navigate to cancelplan, hit Cancel, hit Finish Cancellation, and a confirmation email lands. The trouble is everything around the happy path — app-store billing that hides the button, “I deleted the app, why am I still charged” confusion, and the pause option people miss when a break is all they need. Here’s the complete exit, straight from Netflix’s own help pages.
The exact cancel flow
Choose the record you want to end
| Record | Cancellation check |
|---|---|
| Direct base subscription | Complete the service account’s cancellation |
| Store or provider plan | Use the actual seller’s account |
| Bundle, add-on or shared plan | Confirm included services and separate charges |
| Trial or pause | Check access loss and any restart date |
Go to the Manage your membership page — sign in if you haven’t already.
Tap or click “Cancel.”
Tap or click “Finish Cancellation.” A confirmation email is sent to the account’s email address — save it.
Deleting an app, leaving a profile or requesting a refund does not establish that renewal stopped. Keep the completed cancellation and effective date from the actual billing seller.
Netflix’s help center says it plainly: this is the only way to cancel your account. Signing out of your account or deleting the Netflix app doesn’t cancel it — a sentence most people learn after a surprise renewal.
When do charges stop?
- No further charges unless you restart — canceling stops billing at your account’s close
- Time left in your billing period? You can keep using Netflix until the account cancels automatically at the end of the period. Check Payment History for the close date.
- Account on hold? It closes immediately when you cancel.
- Gift card or promotional balance? You keep using Netflix for as many months as the remaining balance covers, then access ends when the balance runs out.
Why you might not see a cancel button
Open Account → Membership and follow the cancellation link or payment-partner instruction displayed there. The receipt and account record identify the route; watching on an iPhone or Android device does not establish app-store billing.
Netflix says Apple billing is unavailable for most new or rejoining members, but a legacy Apple subscription can still require its own cancellation. If changing from an old Apple-billed plan, verify that Apple renewal stopped separately rather than assuming a new payment method ended it.
For a provider package, follow that provider’s instructions. If moving an existing Netflix account into an eligible new package, use its account-linking instructions rather than automatically opening a second membership. Verify the linked account and resulting billing.
Pause instead of cancel
If you just want a break, Netflix lets you pause membership for one month instead of canceling: continue watching until your next billing date, no charge that month, and after one month billing resumes at your plan price. The pause option isn’t available on the Basic plan or for some payment methods (direct debit, gift cards, some partner payments). Pauses resume automatically — calendar the restart or you’ll be paying again without deciding to.
What survives the cancellation
Cancellation stops membership billing; it is separate from requesting account deletion. Netflix’s current help describes a twenty-four-month retention period for viewing activity and specified account information after closure, rather than an indefinite guarantee.
If restarting, follow the existing account’s Sign In route and review the confirmation. Netflix’s restart help warns that if the old account can no longer be found, a new account will not contain the prior profiles or My List. Save information you need before leaving instead of relying on permanent retention.
Subscription downloads are not permanent ownership. Arrange another way to watch anything needed offline after access ends. Preserve receipts and the end-date confirmation somewhere you can access without Netflix.
The cheaper exit: downgrade before you leave
Compare the plans offered for your country and billing arrangement. An ad-supported tier may have different content, device or feature availability; do not assume the same catalog and capabilities at a lower price.
Read the effective date and price before confirming a change. A downgrade is different from cancellation and does not establish a refund for the current period. For partner billing, ask which plan changes the partner supports.
Special cases and exceptions
- Death of the account holder: the executor closes the account with proof of authority; unused prepaid balance and billing-period refunds follow Netflix’s terms. The executor’s cancellation checklist covers the document kit and the watch-for-renewals step.
- Billed through a package after a provider switch: if your old provider billed Netflix, canceling the provider bill can strand the Netflix billing — check the Membership section before assuming the provider cancel ended Netflix.
- Family / shared profile: each profile belongs to one account; canceling the account ends access for everyone on it — make sure everyone who uses it knows.
Cancel an extra-member slot without canceling the base plan
Deleting or removing a profile is not the billing control for a paid extra-member slot. The account owner can open the extra-members page, choose Cancel slot, then confirm Cancel extra member slot. Save the displayed last watch date and the confirmation sent to both parties.
Netflix’s extra-member help says canceling the primary account also cancels its extra-member slots. If keeping the base membership but removing one slot, verify that specific slot’s end and the revised charge. A package can have separate extra-member billing, so compare both receipts.
Prevent an unwanted household restart
Netflix recommends changing the password after cancellation and selecting Sign out of all devices if you want to prevent another household user from restarting. Perform that through the official account controls; merely deleting the app from your own phone leaves other sessions untouched.
If a new charge appears, inspect the account for a restart or reversal of cancellation before repeating the original request. Keep the cancellation and restart dates together so support can identify which change caused the payment.
Still charged? Check four distinct causes
- The canceled account is different from the one on the receipt.
- A partner package or legacy store subscription remains active.
- Someone restarted membership or undid the cancellation.
- The entry is an earlier authorized payment or a separate extra-member record.
Compare the transaction and covered period with your confirmation. Ask the actual billing company for its decision and any refund. Contact your payment provider promptly about an unresolved dispute and its deadline.
Keep a short cancellation record
For Netflix, save the account email, billing seller and displayed membership end date. Review any extra-member arrangement and record the cancellation confirmation before leaving the account. If someone in the household later sees an option to restart, ask them to leave the membership unchanged while you verify that renewal has stopped.
For a Netflix charge after cancellation, compare the receipt’s account and seller with the saved end date. Check whether another household login, partner-billed plan or membership restart explains it. Give the responsible seller those records and ask for the authorization and covered period, followed by a separate written decision on any refund request.
If the Netflix subscriber has died, ask the actual billing seller for the process available to an authorized representative. Identify household access and any partner-billed membership before assuming that one account request resolves all payments. Keep the accepted request and end date in the estate cancellation checklist.
Cancellation and billing follow-up template
Complete the cancellation in the correct account first. Copy this wording into the official support channel for missing confirmation or a disputed charge; sending a letter alone does not replace the account flow. Keep the case reference, and omit passwords, security codes and full payment-card details.
Cancel Netflix account: frequently asked questions
Does deleting a profile cancel an extra-member slot?
No. Use the account owner’s extra-member billing page, Cancel slot and the final confirmation.
Does canceling the primary account end extra-member slots?
Netflix’s extra-member help says those slots also cancel with the primary account. Save the affected access dates.
Can someone restart after I cancel?
A household user with account access may restart or undo cancellation. Netflix recommends changing the password and signing out all devices to prevent that.
Is profile information kept forever?
No indefinite retention is promised. Current cancellation help describes twenty-four months for viewing activity and specified data; a later new account may lack the old profiles.
Does pause stop renewal permanently?
No. Eligible pauses restart billing. Review the next charge date, extension limits and account status.
Is every iPhone Netflix membership Apple-billed?
No. Netflix says Apple billing is unavailable for most new or rejoining members. Use the receipt and Membership section to identify any legacy Apple subscription.
Does continued access mean cancellation failed?
No. Check the confirmed expiry and any gift-card or promotional balance. Access can continue without a new recurring payment.
What if a partner pays for Netflix?
Follow Membership’s partner instructions and check extra-member billing separately. A package change and cancellation can have different consequences.
