Cancelling a subscription usually stops the next renewal; it does not automatically refund the latest charge. Cancel through the company that billed you, read the refund terms for your product and country, and save the confirmation. If the payment was wrong or unauthorized, ask your card issuer about its dispute deadline promptly.
Before you start
- Cancel ≠ refund — stopping renewal and reclaiming the latest charge are separate requests
- Match the receipt to the seller — Apple, Google, a carrier, or the brand may own the money path
- Read the commitment — monthly drafts can still sit under an annual contract
- Ask about dispute deadlines early — waiting on merchant chat does not pause the card issuer’s clock
| Check | Record before proceeding |
|---|---|
| Authority and account | Correct owner, policyholder or authorized representative |
| Agreement and route | Applicable terms, deadline and accepted submission channel |
| Requested outcome | Cancellation, transfer, surrender or refund review |
| Completion evidence | Written effective date, remaining balance and decision |
Identify who collected the payment from the receipt (brand, app store, carrier, or reseller).
Cancel through that seller and save the confirmation with any end date.
Request any eligible refund in writing with amount, date, product, and confirmation reference.
Ask your card issuer promptly about dispute deadlines if the seller will not resolve it.
A submitted inquiry is not proof of completed cancellation or an approved refund. Finish the required process and retain its written decision.

Subscription refund rules: Start with who billed the subscription
Use the receipt to identify the seller, product, payment date, subscription term and account email. Deleting an app or simply stopping use does not cancel billing. If Apple, Google or another reseller collected the payment, use that seller’s cancellation and refund process.
Be specific about the result you want: stop the next renewal, end access now, refund the latest charge, or correct an unauthorized payment. These are separate requests, so ask for each one that applies.
Amazon and Microsoft refund examples
Amazon Prime, US: the initial three-business-day rule covers signup or trial conversion, with possible deductions for benefits used. Later refunds depend on no eligible purchases or benefit use since the latest charge. It is not a refund window after every renewal. Read the Prime terms and our Prime cancellation steps.
Microsoft consumer subscriptions: refund eligibility varies by timing, product and country. The latest recurring-charge refund within 30 days is limited to once per account per product. Proration has separate conditions. Check Microsoft’s current policy and our Microsoft 365 guide; business contracts use different rules.
Check the commitment behind the monthly payment
A monthly charge can still be one installment of an annual contract. Before cancelling, look for the commitment end date, required notice, early-termination charge and the date cancellation takes effect.
For gyms, distinguish dues during notice, annual charges, service fees and a genuine early-termination fee. The EōS guide explains why its published monthly service charge should not be called a cancellation fee. Use the gym checklist to request a final amount in writing.
Make a specific refund request
I was charged [amount] on [date] for [product/account]. I cancelled on [date], confirmation [reference]. I am requesting [amount or an eligibility review] because [accurate reason]. Please confirm the refund decision, relevant policy and expected payment method.
Attach the receipt, cancellation confirmation and the part of the policy that supports the request. If the problem is a billing error, describe the mismatch clearly. An accurate explanation is more useful than calling an authorized subscription unauthorized.
Company policy does not remove applicable consumer rights. If a local cancellation right may apply, identify your jurisdiction and ask the provider to explain its decision under those rules.
Escalate without missing a deadline
If the seller does not resolve the problem, keep its response and ask your card issuer or bank about the correct dispute process. A chargeback is not a guaranteed refund. Unauthorized use, duplicate billing and dissatisfaction with a valid purchase are different claims and require different evidence.
Do not wait for a full billing cycle before asking about deadlines. The FTC’s subscription guidance explains cancellation records and reporting problems. Continue tracking any promised refund separately from renewal status.
Apple and Google refund requests need their own decision
For Apple-billed purchases, open reportaproblem.apple.com using the purchasing Apple Account, choose Request a refund, state the accurate reason, select the item and submit. A request under review is not approval. If the item is missing, check the receipt and purchasing account before contacting support.
Google Play’s refund policy varies by product, timing and country. Its general policy does not promise refunds for most purchases. Use the current refund route for the transaction; developer contact may be appropriate when the policy directs you there. Do not treat a short review window as guaranteed reimbursement.
Cancel recurring billing separately and save the end date. Store-billed charges and a direct brand subscription can coexist, so one cancellation or refund result does not prove that every account stopped renewing.
Track four different statuses
| Status | Evidence to keep |
|---|---|
| Renewal stopped | Recorded end date and subscription status |
| Refund requested | Submitted request and reference |
| Refund approved | Written amount, method and timing |
| Money received | Matching account or statement entry |
An approved refund can take time to appear at the payment provider. Track the promised amount and method without treating a pending authorization, reversal and posted credit as identical. If the amount differs, ask for the itemized decision rather than submitting duplicate requests that obscure the history.
Protect credit-card billing-error rights
The CFPB says to contact the card company immediately about a billing problem and, to protect US credit-card billing-error rights, also send written notice within sixty calendar days after the charge appeared on the statement. Use the issuer’s billing-dispute instructions and address. This is not a universal deadline for debit cards or every dissatisfaction claim.
Merchant review does not establish an extension of the issuer deadline. Ask the issuer how a promised merchant credit affects the dispute and inform it when a refund actually posts. Describe what happened accurately: a duplicate charge, continued renewal after a completed cancellation and a purchase you regret are different situations.
Still charged? Check the product and period
- The renewal cancellation was not completed or belonged to another login.
- A second seller, family account or add-on still has an active subscription.
- The posting relates to an earlier authorization or committed installment.
- A refund was requested but denied, or approved to a different payment method.
Match the receipt, merchant descriptor, subscription and confirmation before escalating. Keep a dated timeline and send the relevant evidence through the responsible seller’s official channel. Do not share passwords or full card numbers in a refund letter.
Shared accounts and estate refunds
A shared payment card does not establish which account purchased the plan. Find the receipt and ask the account holder or authorized representative to use the seller’s process. For an estate, ask about authority documents and where an approved credit will be paid; do not assume it can be redirected to a relative’s account.
Keep cancellation and estate payment records together using the executor checklist. A family member stopping access or deleting an app is not evidence of renewal cancellation.
Prepare a request that can be checked
For a subscription refund, gather the exact product, seller’s receipt, renewal or authorization date and the cancellation result. State whether the problem is an unwanted future renewal, an earlier charge or a service that was not delivered as agreed. Send the request to the collecting seller and ask which refund rule applies to that transaction.
Track cancellation, refund approval and payment posting as separate events. Save the seller’s decision, amount and expected destination alongside the original receipt, then reconcile the posted credit. If the answer is incomplete, ask about the missing transaction while preserving any bank-dispute deadline; a support follow-up does not itself extend that deadline.
Request and follow-up template
Use the provider’s accepted procedure and any required form. Adapt this wording to the specific request and keep the written decision. A follow-up letter does not replace the required account process. Omit passwords, security codes and full payment-card details.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does cancellation automatically refund the last charge?
No. Record the renewal end date and request any eligible refund separately.
Who should receive the refund request?
The actual seller on the receipt: the brand, app store, carrier or reseller. Check the purchasing account.
Is monthly payment always a monthly contract?
No. It can be an installment toward an annual commitment. Check remaining obligations before assuming the balance ends.
Does Apple refund every subscription request?
No approval is guaranteed. Submit through its official process and save the written decision.
Is Google’s review window a guaranteed refund period?
No. Eligibility depends on product, timing and country. Follow the applicable policy.
Should I wait for merchant review before learning a dispute deadline?
No. Ask the issuer promptly. The CFPB describes a written sixty-day statement-based deadline for US credit-card billing errors, not every payment type.
Does refund approval prove the money arrived?
No. Match the approved amount and payment method with the actual statement entry.
Can an estate refund simply go to a relative?
Do not assume that. Use the seller’s authorized-representative process and confirm where any approved payment goes.
