Go to youtube.com/paid_memberships → Manage membership → Deactivate → Continue → pick a reason → Yes, cancel. Benefits run through the end of the billing period, then stop. Billed by Apple or Google Play? Cancel in your Apple or Google Play account settings, not YouTube — Google’s own help says to cancel app-tied memberships where you’re billed.
Before you cancel YouTube Premium
- Know your biller: YouTube-direct memberships cancel at youtube.com/paid_memberships; Apple-billed and Google Play-billed memberships cancel in their store accounts
- Benefits last to period end — cancellation stops future charges, not current access; you’re not charged again unless you resubscribe
- Family plan? Only the family manager can cancel the plan; members remove themselves (and lose the shared benefits at the manager’s cancel)
- Pixel Pass subscribers: YouTube Premium bundled through Pixel Pass cancels through the Pixel Pass subscription, not YouTube
YouTube Premium and YouTube Music Premium are Google-billed subscriptions, which makes their cancellation one of the cleanest on this site when you pay YouTube directly — and one of the easiest to miss when you don’t. The catch is billing: if you joined out of the YouTube iOS app, Apple bills you; if you hold the membership through Google Play, the Play Store owns the cancel. Google’s help page maps all of it. Here’s the flow, the billing crossovers, and the family-plan rules.
The 6-step cancel flow (YouTube-billed)
Identify the plan and billing desk
| What you have | What to check |
|---|---|
| YouTube recurring plan | Use paid_memberships and complete cancellation |
| Apple or Google Play billing | Use that store’s subscription controls |
| Annual prepaid plan | Non-recurring; check expiry and ask support about early access termination |
| Google One / AI bundle | Check the bundle and any standalone subscription separately |
| Family plan | The manager handles the plan renewal |
Go to youtube.com/paid_memberships — the paid-memberships page.
Click “Manage membership.”
Click “Deactivate.”
Click “Continue” to cancel.
Select your reason for canceling, then click next.
Click “Yes, cancel.” You’re charged at the start of each billing cycle until you cancel — so the cancel must reach the confirmation step to stop billing.
Billed by Apple or Google? The billing crossovers
Google’s own help flags the two situations where the YouTube cancel page is the wrong place to end the membership:
- Billed by Apple: you joined from the YouTube iOS app, so cancel from your Apple account — the same flow as any iPhone app subscription.
- Billed by Google Play: your membership runs through a Google Play subscription, so cancel within your Google Play account settings — see our Google Play guide.
- Already canceled? Confirm by checking the paid membership section at youtube.com/paid_memberships — “already canceled” is a common reason members think it’s still active.
- Pixel Pass: YouTube Premium received through a Pixel Pass subscription cancels through the Pixel Pass subscription, not YouTube.
What happens after you cancel
- No further charges unless you resubscribe
- Benefits continue to the end of the billing period — then your account returns to standard YouTube (ads, no background play, no offline downloads)
- Pause eligibility varies: Apple-billed and annual plans cannot use YouTube’s pause option. Eligible pauses resume, so save the restart date.
Family plan members vs the manager
- Family manager: canceling the family plan ends Premium for everyone on it; members’ Google accounts keep working on free YouTube.
- Plan member: you can’t cancel the plan — the manager must. A member who stops the shared payments has left the plan, not ended it for others.
Still being charged after canceling?
- The billing crossover again: the number-one cause is canceling in the wrong place — YouTube’s site won’t reach an Apple or Google Play-billed membership
- Final cycle predates the cancel: you pay the cycle you’re in; a charge dated before your cancel confirmation can be legitimate
- A second membership: you may hold both a YouTube Premium and a YouTube Music Premium line — each cancels separately
What survives the cancellation
Your Google account is untouched by any of this — YouTube Premium is a subscription riding on it, and canceling the subscription ends the benefits, not the account. What ends with the subscription: ad-free playback, background play, offline downloads (downloaded videos and music stop playing when the subscription ends — plan around that before a flight or commute), and the Premium audio quality. What survives, tied to your account: your watch history, playlists, subscriptions, and your YouTube Music library — the likes, playlists, and upload history stay exactly where they were. Re-subscribing later restores the benefits over the same intact library.
Subscription downloads are not permanent purchases. Arrange another way to access needed content before expiry; saving a playlist does not preserve offline Premium playback.
The cheaper exit: live with the ads
The downgrade question for YouTube Premium is simpler than most services, because the free tier isn’t a crippled product — it’s regular YouTube. If the motive is price, dropping to the free tier keeps the entire platform, the same account, and the same library, trading only the ad-free, background-play, and offline features. Households re-examining streaming stacks often land here: YouTube is the service they actually use daily, and the ad-free premium was the luxury line item rather than the core.
Check the eligibility, billing desk and effective date for any proposed change. Annual prepaid plans, shared plans and store-billed plans can have different switching restrictions.
Special cases and exceptions
- Death of the account holder: canceling ends billing to the estate card; the executor’s document kit in the cancel-after-death checklist applies, including app-store-billed lines.
- Switching plans: read the eligible route and timing. An existing recurring plan may need cancellation before an annual purchase; a prepaid annual member may have to wait until expiry to change to a shared plan.
- Spotify or Music holdouts: if YouTube Music is your replacement question, our Spotify guide covers the mirror-image cancel for that service.
Annual prepaid plans do not auto-renew
YouTube’s annual-plan help describes a prepaid, non-recurring individual membership. It expires after its purchased term rather than renewing monthly. Record the expiry date in Purchases & Memberships; the absence of a normal renewal-cancel button can therefore be expected.
The published annual policy says these plans are non-refundable and cannot be paused. For early termination of access or a suspected fraudulent transaction, use the official support route. Do not promise a prorated refund merely because months remain.
Pause is available only for eligible plans
YouTube’s pause option is unavailable for Apple-billed and annual memberships. Eligible members can choose one to six months; the pause begins after the paid billing cycle. Family members lose Premium benefits during it, and stored downloads cannot be played while paused.
Save the resume date and check the price that will apply. If you want a permanent end, cancel during the pause rather than allowing it to restart. A pause confirmation is different from an expiration confirmation.
Check Google One and duplicate subscriptions
Google’s duplicate-subscription help warns that joining an eligible Google One or AI bundle does not automatically cancel a standalone YouTube subscription. Compare the bundle receipt with Paid memberships before assuming a new package replaced the old payment.
Premium Lite and full Premium have different benefits. Do not assume the included plan keeps every feature of the standalone one. Record exactly which entitlement remains after cancellation and review any separately purchased Music Premium or channel membership.
A final status check that catches mistakes
Save the purchasing Google Account, billing provider, cancellation time and benefit end date. Check the Status field in Paid memberships and the actual store receipt for store billing. Continued paid access before the end date does not mean another renewal is scheduled.
For an unexplained charge, provide the transaction, covered period and status confirmation through official support. Request any refund through the actual biller. If unresolved, ask your payment provider promptly about its dispute process and deadline. Do not disclose a password or security code in a cancellation message.
Cancellation and billing follow-up template
Complete the cancellation in the correct account first. Copy this wording into the official support channel for missing confirmation or a disputed charge; sending a letter alone does not replace the account flow. Keep the case reference, and omit passwords, security codes and full payment-card details.
Cancel YouTube Premium: frequently asked questions
Where do I cancel a recurring YouTube Premium plan?
Use Paid memberships for YouTube billing and the relevant store for Apple or Google Play billing. Finish the confirmation and record the status and end date.
Why might the cancel button be missing?
Check the owning account, store biller and whether the plan is prepaid or already canceled. A missing button alone does not identify the biller.
Does an annual plan renew monthly?
The published annual plan is prepaid and non-recurring. Check its expiry; ask support if you want access terminated early.
Can I pause an Apple-billed or annual plan?
No. YouTube’s pause help excludes Apple billing and annual plans. For eligible plans, keep the restart date and check the price on resumption.
Is an annual plan automatically refundable?
No. The annual help states these plans are non-refundable. Use support for applicable exceptions or fraud reporting rather than assuming unused months are prorated.
Does joining a Google One bundle cancel standalone Premium?
No. Google’s duplicate-subscription help says standalone plans are not automatically canceled. Verify each billing line and the included entitlement.
Does Premium cancellation cancel every YouTube purchase?
No. Check separate channel memberships and subscription lines. Full Premium includes Music Premium benefits, but separately purchased plans still need review.
Can an ordinary family member cancel the shared plan?
The family manager manages plan billing. Leaving the family group is a different action and does not establish that the manager’s renewal ended.
