Go to account.spotify.com → Manage your plan → Cancel subscription. Your Premium stays until your next billing date, then the account switches to the free, ad-supported tier — playlists and saved music stay. No “change plan” option means you’re billed through a partner company (a provider or reseller), and you cancel there. Plan members on Family/Duo just remove themselves; only the plan manager cancels the plan.
Before you cancel Spotify Premium
- Understand “cancel” here = “downgrade to free.” Your playlist library and saved music stay on the account; you lose Premium features at the next billing date
- Know who bills you: if the account shows no “change plan/cancel” option, you pay a partner company (mobile or internet provider) — cancel through them
- Family or Duo member? Only the plan manager can cancel the plan; members remove themselves (they keep their own free account)
- Free-trial cancel switches to free immediately and the zero-priced trial can’t be reactivated
Spotify’s cancellation is friendly in a specific way: cancelling Premium doesn’t delete anything — you keep your playlists, saved songs, and account, and simply drop to the free tier at the next billing date. The friction lives in billing arrangements: an app-store, partner-company, or family-plan subscription each cancels somewhere different, and “I canceled but still charged” almost always traces to canceling on the wrong account or the wrong biller. Here’s the exact flow and every billing arrangement that changes it.
The exact cancel flow
Choose the record you want to end
| Record | Cancellation check |
|---|---|
| Direct base subscription | Complete the service account’s cancellation |
| Store or provider plan | Use the actual seller’s account |
| Bundle, add-on or shared plan | Confirm included services and separate charges |
| Trial or pause | Check access loss and any restart date |
Go to your account page at spotify.com/account.
Open Manage your plan and check the Payment section — this tells you who bills you.
Select “Cancel subscription.” Your Premium stays until your next billing date, then the account switches to free.
Keep your music: playlists and saved music remain on the account, and you can still log in and play with ads.
If there’s no “change plan” option
Spotify is explicit: no option to change plan means your plan is associated with a partner company (for example, your mobile or internet provider). To cancel you have to go to that partner’s contact link — check the Payment section on Manage your plan for where to go. Cancel with Spotify itself won’t work on these accounts; the partner owns the billing relationship.
Family, Duo, and managed accounts
- Plan manager (you own the Family/Duo plan): the 3 steps above cancel the whole plan — and every member loses Premium starting from the next payment date. Tell them before you cancel.
- Managed accounts: canceling a family plan moves managed accounts to the free, ad-supported plan.
- Plan member (you’re on someone else’s Family/Duo): the steps above only remove your account from the plan — they don’t cancel the plan. The plan manager must cancel or update the payment method.
The free-trial rule
Canceling during a zero-priced free trial switches your account to the free service immediately — and Spotify notes zero-priced trials can’t be reactivated. If you’re mid-trial and just want to avoid conversion, cancel now; if you wanted to use the trial through its natural end, canceling ends it early by design.
Still being charged after canceling?
Spotify’s own guidance for “canceled but still charged” centers on which account is charged: check that you canceled on the account that holds the payment method, and that the plan isn’t partner-billed (where the partner owns the cancel). The common causes:
- Canceled on the wrong Spotify account — you have more than one login (a different email address may hold Premium)
- Partner-billed plan — the provider or reseller owns the cancel, not Spotify
- A charge predating the cancel — the final cycle can post before the free switch takes effect; check the date on the descriptor before disputing
What survives the cancellation — and the free-tier fallback
Spotify’s cancellation is unusual among streamers in what it costs you: almost nothing permanent. Your account, every playlist, your followed artists, and your entire listening library survive the subscription — what ends is Premium itself. Offline downloads stop playing when the subscription lapses (the same die-with-the-billing rule as every streaming service), and ad-free listening, higher audio quality, and unlimited skips go with it. But the account stays exactly as you built it, which is why the free tier works as a genuine pause rather than a departure: drop to free, keep the library, re-subscribe months later without rebuilding anything.
That makes the price-motivated exit sequence worth thinking through before canceling: downgrading to the free tier keeps everything except the Premium features, while a full cancellation also does the same (the account persists either way — the difference is mostly psychological). The one real loss either way is the downloads: if you’ve built an offline library for commutes or flights, sync your expectations — that library dies at the billing boundary, so the last week of Premium is the time to check what actually needs replacing.
Special cases and exceptions
- Death of the account holder: canceling Premium ends billing to the estate card; Spotify accounts aren’t transferable in the subscription sense, so closing with proof of authority and any refund request follows the executor’s cancellation checklist.
- Bought through Apple or Google: app-store-billed Premium cancels in the store (iPhone Settings → Subscriptions, or Google Play → Subscriptions) — Spotify’s on-site cancel won’t reach app-store billing, the same rule as other app-store subscriptions.
- Free account showing charges: per Spotify, a free account has no payment info, so charges mean Premium lives on a different account — find it before disputing.
Audiobook add-ons and Audiobooks Access are different
Check Plans and add-ons before deciding what to end. Spotify’s add-on help says you can cancel an add-on while keeping Premium, and active add-ons automatically cancel when Premium is canceled. Save the result for the plan and add-on rather than assuming a larger payment is a duplicate.
Audiobooks Access is a separate plan. Its official help directs you to Manage your subscription → Cancel. If changing from that plan to Premium, Spotify says to cancel it and wait until it ends before switching. Identify the exact plan name on the receipt.
A purchased audiobook or a listening-time top-up is different again. Record that transaction separately; stopping a recurring plan is not proof that a one-time purchase was refunded.
Cancellation and refund review use different records
Spotify’s refund page directs partner-payment refund requests to the partner and retailer gift-card returns to the retailer. For a direct Premium payment, use the applicable refund policy and support channel; unused time is not an automatic refund just because you switched to free.
Keep the charge amount, transaction date, account email, billing owner and cancellation result. Explain whether the issue is an unexpected renewal, another account, an add-on or a one-time purchase. Ask for the decision and the expected posting date of any approved credit.
Keep a short cancellation record
For Spotify, record the plan owner, billing seller and the date Premium is shown as ending. Check audiobook-related purchases or subscriptions separately from the music plan. Save the account’s resulting status and confirmation; playlists remaining in the account do not establish that the paid plan will renew.
If a Spotify payment continues, identify the plan or audiobook product on the receipt before repeating cancellation. Check the seller and purchasing account, including any partner billing. Ask that seller to explain the product, authorization and covered period, and keep any refund decision separate from the confirmation that Premium has ended.
For a deceased Spotify subscriber, the authorized representative should ask the billing seller which process and documents apply. Review any shared-plan ownership and separately purchased audio products before requesting an outcome. Record the plan’s end date in the estate cancellation checklist without assuming that account access can be reassigned.
Cancellation and billing follow-up template
Complete the cancellation in the correct account first. Copy this wording into the official support channel for missing confirmation or a disputed charge; sending a letter alone does not replace the account flow. Keep the case reference, and omit passwords, security codes and full payment-card details.
Cancel Spotify Premium: frequently asked questions
Do playlists remain after Premium ends?
Yes. Spotify says playlists and saved music remain on the free account. Paid offline playback and other Premium features end.
Does canceling Premium cancel its active add-ons?
Spotify’s add-on help says active add-ons cancel with Premium. Save the resulting account records and end dates.
Can I cancel an audiobook add-on but keep Premium?
Yes. Review Plans and add-ons, remove the unwanted add-on and confirm the base plan and new charge.
Is Audiobooks Access the same as Premium?
No. It is a separate plan with its own Manage your subscription cancellation. Check its exact name and expiry before switching.
Will a one-time audiobook purchase be refunded?
Cancellation of renewal does not decide a purchase refund. Identify the purchase and follow its applicable refund policy.
Can a Family member cancel the manager’s billing?
No. Removing your own account from a plan does not cancel the manager’s subscription. Ask the manager to handle plan billing.
What happens to a zero-priced trial?
Spotify says it switches to free immediately when canceled and cannot be reactivated. Read the confirmation before expecting the remaining trial days.
Who handles a partner-payment refund?
The partner collecting the payment. Keep its receipt and cancellation record and request review through that seller.
