Cox is transitioning to Spectrum — Charter completed its acquisition of Cox on August 20, 2026, and the official Cox cancellation page says to give at least 24 hours’ notice. For services other than Spectrum Mobile, the final bill is prorated; Spectrum Mobile is billed for the full cycle. Cox’s page directs customers to sign in or call 800-234-3993, and equipment can be returned to a Spectrum Store or participating UPS Store. Your existing agreement’s terms carry over; new Spectrum plans are no-contract. Return Cox equipment promptly after.
Before you cancel Cox
- Know the new map: Cox’s support site (cox.com) now displays “Cox is now Spectrum” and its cancel page sells Spectrum plans — your cancellation runs through the combined company
- Check your contract status: existing Cox agreements keep their terms (including any term commitment and fees); Spectrum-branded plans market themselves as no-contract, no-data-caps
- Equipment goes back: the Cox/Spectrum modem and boxes are leased — unreturned gear bills, so line up the return with the cancellation
- Save the confirmation with the end date and final bill amount — mergers are when account records get messy
Charter completed its acquisition of Cox on August 20, 2026. Cox’s current support page uses Spectrum branding, but cancellation still requires the route and terms applicable to your individual account. Check the current bill, accepted end date and equipment obligations.
Here’s what the merger actually changed, which cancel path works today, how your contract carries over, and the equipment return that decides whether your final bill is clean.
What the merger means for your cancellation
| Question | The answer now |
|---|---|
| Who do I cancel with? | Use Cox’s current cancellation page and the contact on your bill; confirm the account route with support. |
| Can I cancel online? | Start with the sign-in offered by Cox’s current cancellation page. Ask support to complete the request if the account does not provide a completed cancellation. |
| What happens to my Cox contract? | Existing agreements carry their own terms — any term commitment and early-termination terms live in your Cox agreement, not Spectrum’s no-contract marketing |
| Does my equipment change? | Leased Cox gear still returns through the company’s return process; ask on the cancellation call whether your equipment migrates or goes back |
The cancel paths, post-merger
Start with the account link and contact listed on your current bill. Cox’s current official cancellation page offers sign-in and 800-234-3993. Do not assume a legacy account can already be canceled in a standard Spectrum.net profile.
Ask the team to identify which services and account number the request covers. Give the desired end date and ask which notice requirement applies. Save the accepted request, effective date and final-charge explanation in writing.
Obtain the equipment list and return instructions in the same conversation. If you are keeping phone numbers, arrange the transfer with the receiving provider before disconnecting that phone service. A new internet installation is not itself a request to close the old account.
| Record | Before requesting cancellation |
|---|---|
| Service agreement | Notice, effective date and final billing period |
| Separate lines / plans | Which end, remain or change price |
| Financing / promotion | Remaining balance and any lost credit |
| Rented hardware | Serial inventory, return route and deadline |
- Start with the current bill and Cox’s official account sign-in or cancellation contact, 800-234-3993.
- List services to end and retain. Give at least twenty-four hours’ notice as specified by the Cox FAQ and confirm the actual end date.
- Ask which account-specific final-billing and agreement terms apply, including fees and continuing services.
- Obtain the device list and return instructions. Keep the cancellation record and itemized return receipt.
A rental return does not itself cancel service, and a cancellation does not prove the rental return was credited. Save the service order and itemized equipment receipt separately.
Contracts, fees, and the “no contracts” marketing
Two truths coexist after the merger. Spectrum’s marketing (now on Cox’s own cancel page) leads with no contracts, no data caps, no surprises — that describes new Spectrum-branded plans. If you signed a Cox agreement with a term commitment, its terms carry over: any early-termination fee or notice requirement lives in your document, not the new branding. Before quoting anything, pull the agreement from your account (or ask the rep to read it on the call) — and if you’re month-to-month, the exit is notice-based and clean.
Special cases and exceptions
- Moving: ask whether the destination is served and compare any transfer offer with the costs of canceling.
- Switching to fiber or another ISP: schedule the new install before the cancel date so the gap between providers is measured in hours, not days.
- Bundles: ask for the price and conditions of retained services before accepting a replacement offer.
- Death of the account holder: the executor cancels with proof of authority; the executor’s cancellation checklist covers the document kit and the order of operations.
- Business Cox accounts: Cox Business customers follow the business-account path — phone-based, contract terms in the service agreement. Our Comcast Business guide shows what that process looks like at a comparable operator.
Check which contract and billing terms apply
Use the contact and account link on the current bill, together with Cox’s official cancellation page. Ask which agreement and billing policy apply to your account, and retain the written response. A branding change does not prove that the login, cancellation route or contract has changed.
The migration timeline: what happens between now and full Spectrum
The completed transaction and current Cox support branding establish the company change. They do not establish when this individual account moves to another portal. Check the current statement, account notices and support instructions before using a different login or return route.
Equipment: return it, and prove it
Panoramic WiFi gateways and TV boxes are rentals, and unreturned-equipment fees are how canceled internet accounts generate their last surprise charge. Get the return moving during your cancellation call — use whichever options your rep confirms (store drop-off or a prepaid shipping label are the usual two) — and keep the receipt. A scanned receipt listing the device count is the difference between a clean close and a final-bill dispute. Your own router, your own mesh gear, and anything you bought outright stays with you — only rented hardware goes back.
Legacy Cox billing and standard Spectrum terms differ
The current Cox cancellation FAQ says at least twenty-four hours’ notice and prorated charges for services other than Spectrum Mobile; Mobile bills a full cycle. Standard Spectrum residential terms separately describe full monthly subscription charges, subject to applicable law and its guarantee.
Ask which policy governs this particular account and service. Save the response with the old agreement and the current statement. Do not copy a billing rule from the Spectrum guide onto a legacy Cox account just because the logo changed.
Purchased Contour content is different from recordings
Cox’s purchased-content terms say titles bought through Contour are no longer available on Contour set-top boxes after TV cancellation, but can remain viewable through the stated web or compatible mobile route using the Cox login. Preserve the account email and purchase receipts before returning boxes.
A DVR recording and a purchased title are different records. Check the purchased-content library and current viewing route; do not promise that recordings on a returned receiver will survive. Ask support if a particular title or login cannot be accessed.
Make a service and equipment checklist
For a legacy Cox account during the Spectrum transition, begin with the provider and account route shown on the current bill. List television, internet, voice and optional services and state which should end. Ask which company’s policy and confirmation apply to this account rather than assuming a branding change has already moved every billing record.
For legacy Cox rentals, record each device and serial number before contacting the current account-support route. Ask which return instructions and locations apply to those particular devices during the transition. Keep the receipt with the account number on the final bill so equipment credited under one record is not lost in a provider-routing dispute.
Still charged? Check four specific causes
- A second service, line or subscription was omitted from the request.
- The statement covers an earlier authorization or a contractual final billing period.
- A financing balance, termination fee or lost promotional credit changed the amount.
- A rental return was incomplete, late or not yet linked to the correct serial number.
For a legacy Cox final-bill issue, match the charge to the provider, account number and service period printed on that bill. Ask the current billing team which final-bill policy governs the account and attach the relevant end-date or equipment record. Retain its written response instead of assuming that a new logo resolved an old balance.
For a deceased legacy Cox subscriber, establish the current provider’s representative route and required evidence before requesting a transfer or disconnect. Note household services and rentals that remain in use. Keep the original account number, provider response and final decisions in the estate cancellation checklist.
Cancellation and billing follow-up template
Complete the cancellation in the correct account first. Copy this wording into the official support channel for missing confirmation or a disputed charge; sending a letter alone does not replace the account flow. Keep the case reference, and omit passwords, security codes and full payment-card details.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which contact should a legacy Cox customer use?
Start with the current bill and Cox’s official cancellation page. It lists sign-in and 800-234-3993; do not assume your account has fully migrated to Spectrum.net.
How much notice does the Cox FAQ specify?
At least twenty-four hours. Confirm the accepted request time and actual disconnect date for your service.
Does Cox’s FAQ prorate every service?
No. It describes proration for services other than Spectrum Mobile and full-cycle billing for Mobile. Ask which policy applies to your account.
Can I automatically apply standard Spectrum billing terms?
No. Its standard monthly-charge terms can differ from the Cox FAQ. Ask for the applicable account policy in writing.
Where does Cox’s page direct equipment returns?
A Spectrum Store or participating UPS Store. Obtain the account-specific device list and keep an itemized receipt.
Will purchased Contour titles disappear with the TV box?
The purchased-content terms distinguish set-top-box access from supported web/mobile access. Preserve your login and receipts and verify the current route.
Does canceling internet end mobile lines?
Do not assume so. List each service separately and verify whether it continues, reprices or needs its own request.
What if a transition-related billing record conflicts?
Provide the original account identifier, request, confirmed end date and receipt. Ask the billing team to reconcile the records and give a written decision.
