How to Cancel an Anytime Fitness Membership

Cancel Anytime Fitness through your home club’s accepted route. Check notice, fees and transfer options, copy the letter and verify the final bill.

Quick answer

Anytime Fitness has no global cancel button. Each club is independently owned, and your membership agreement sets the rules — Anytime Fitness’s own FAQ points you there for “the cost to cancel, how to cancel, and any termination fees.” Many clubs require written notice, but the accepted method, notice period, billing cutoff, and any fee are set by your club agreement. Confirm them with your home club before submitting cancellation.

Cancel anytime fitness membership: Before you start

  • Find your home club and get a copy of your membership agreement — it names your notice period and any early-termination fee
  • Know your billing date — many clubs run EFT drafts through ABC Financial; notice must land before the next cycle
  • Choose the exit: cancel, freeze (injury/travel — account must be current), or transfer (free, if you’ve moved 10+ miles)
  • Never “cancel” by stopping bank drafts — unpaid dues can go to collections

Start with your home club and agreement, then match the accepted request route to your deadline. A receipt and a written end date help you check whether the last bill is correct.

Can you cancel Anytime Fitness online, by phone, or in the app?

The official FAQ directs members to the agreement for their location. Check whether your club accepts a portal request, email, an in-person form or mailed notice. Ask for the exact destination and receipt deadline; the national FAQ does not establish one universal app or online workflow.

Method 1: Written notice by certified mail

Use mail if your agreement accepts it. Confirm the notice address and whether the deadline uses receipt, delivery or another event. Certified mail with return receipt documents delivery; it does not override an agreement’s required method.

Your letter needs: your full name, membership/account number, home club name, the date, an unambiguous cancellation sentence, your intended end date per the notice period, and a request for written confirmation. Billing details (EFT through ABC Financial or the club directly) are on your statement.

Re: Cancellation of Anytime Fitness Membership

To the Membership Desk:

Please accept this letter as formal written notice that I am canceling my Anytime Fitness membership (account number above) at [Home Club Name], in accordance with the cancellation provision of my membership agreement. Per the notice period in my agreement, my membership should terminate on [Intended End Date], and I request that all recurring EFT/billing drafts cease as of that date.

Please confirm this cancellation in writing (mail or email), including: my termination date, any final amount due, and whether any early-termination provision applies to my contract type. If you believe a fee applies, cite the agreement section and show the calculation.

Please do not treat this request as a freeze or suspension. I am canceling.

Sincerely,

Method 2: In person at your home club

  1. Go during staffed hours and ask for the cancellation form or to give written notice.

  2. Sign, then keep a copy — photograph the completed form before handing it over.

  3. Ask for written or emailed confirmation with your termination date and any final charge.

  4. Decline the retention pitch politely. Freezes and discounts are offers, not requirements; “I’ve decided to cancel” ends the conversation.

Fees, notice, and contract types

Your situationWhat usually appliesWhat to check
Month-to-month membershipNotice and any fee depend on the agreementYour agreement’s notice clause and the billing cutoff date
Inside a 6/12/18-month commitmentEarly-termination fee may apply — the amount is agreement-specificThe termination section; some agreements waive the fee for relocation beyond a set distance, medical, or military reasons
Moved 10+ miles awayA transfer may be available; ask about eligibility, price, and termsRates can change at the new club; transfer instead of cancel if you’ll keep training
Temporary pause (injury, travel)Freeze/suspension — club-specific terms, account must be currentFreeze length limits and automatic billing restart dates

Anytime Fitness’s own FAQ states that cancellation cost and method are defined by each location’s membership agreement — treat any “universal rule” you read online (including ours) as the common pattern, not your contract.

Special cases and exceptions

  • Moved away: the US FAQ describes fee-free relocation transfers for moves more than ten miles from the last residence, but rates may change. Compare the new terms with canceling; use mail only if accepted by your agreement.
  • Military orders: ask which provision applies, what evidence is needed and whether it changes notice or fees. Obtain a written decision before relying on a waiver.
  • Medical reasons: ask about cancellation or freeze eligibility, evidence, recurring costs and restart date. Confirm any early-termination waiver for your account.
  • Death of the member: the authorized representative should ask for the agreement’s estate provision, required evidence, effective date and review of later charges. Do not assume billing stops automatically at death.
  • Minor’s membership: the signing adult cancels — in person with ID, or by letter signed by the adult named on the agreement.
  • Prepaid membership: check expiration and any renewal opt-in. Ask about unused-time refunds and whether a request is needed to stop renewal.

After you cancel: the verification pass

  • Same day: keep your certified-mail receipt or form copy
  • Within a few days: written confirmation with termination date — chase it if it doesn’t arrive
  • Notice period ends: key-fob access stops; that’s expected, not a failed cancellation
  • Next billing date: no new EFT draft should appear — if one does, contact the club with your confirmation, then the billing processor, then dispute with your bank and report it at reportfraud.ftc.gov

Still charged? Check four causes

  • Receipt missed the cutoff: compare the recorded receipt date with the renewal and notice rules.
  • Request unfinished: distinguish a completed receipt from an unsubmitted form or draft message.
  • Separate service: match the statement entry with training, add-ons or another member’s agreement.
  • Remaining amount: ask for the period and provision supporting final dues, annual fees or an initial-term balance.

Ask the responsible billing team to explain or correct the charge using your request, confirmation and statement. A posting date after cancellation does not alone settle whether a charge was owed. Contact your payment provider promptly about a disputed payment and its deadline.

Follow up without losing the original request date

After the club’s stated response time, send the original receipt and ask: “I submitted cancellation for membership [ID] on [date] through [channel], reference [number]. Please confirm the recorded receipt date, effective end date, last access day and each remaining charge. If another step is required, please identify it and explain how the original submission date is treated.” Keep every response.

Cancel Anytime Fitness membership: frequently asked questions

Can I cancel Anytime Fitness online?

Check your home club’s accepted process. The national FAQ directs you to the agreement; it does not establish one online route for all locations. Save the completed request and confirmation.

How much notice is required?

Use your agreement’s notice period and receipt rule. Confirm the deadline relative to the next billing date and allow delivery time for mail.

Is there an early-termination fee?

The amount and any exception depend on the agreement. Ask for the applicable provision and calculation, including any initial-term balance.

Can I transfer after moving?

The US FAQ describes relocation transfers for moves more than ten miles from the last residence without a transfer fee. Monthly rates can change at the destination; ask for the new terms before deciding.

Does a freeze cancel membership?

No. Confirm any recurring hold charge, access restriction, term extension and automatic restart. Make a permanent cancellation explicit if that is your goal.

Does changing payment details cancel the contract?

No. Submit through the accepted cancellation route. Payment-method changes and disputes address billing, while cancellation ends the membership under its terms.

What happens to my key fob?

Ask for your last access date and any required return procedure. Keep a return receipt if needed. Continued app login or disabled access alone does not prove recurring billing has ended.

Will unused time be refunded?

Request the agreement’s refund provision and a written calculation. A cancellation does not automatically reverse earlier payments; ask separately for review of a disputed charge.
