How to Cancel an Audible Membership

Cancel Audible through the correct biller. Protect direct versus app-store credits, distinguish purchased books from included titles, and check pause limits.

Quick answer

For direct Audible billing, open Membership details on audible.com, select Cancel membership and confirm. Use Apple or Google subscriptions for store billing. Direct unused Premium credits are lost when membership ends; Apple/Google membership credits remain. Purchased books and included-catalog titles have different access rules.

Before you cancel Audible

  • Credit origin matters: direct unused Premium credits are lost at membership end; App Store and Google Play membership credits do not expire and remain. Included-catalog access ends with benefits. Check the individual credit record before canceling.
  • Web-billed vs app-billed: Audible.com cancels direct memberships; App Store / Google Play cancel store-billed ones
  • Eligible monthly pauses have a ninety-day total allowance, split across up to three pauses. Annual plans cannot pause. Read the actual eligibility and restart date.
  • Purchased titles stay — canceling membership ends member benefits, not ownership of titles you already bought

Audible cancellations fail for one common reason: canceling on the website when Apple or Google owns the charge. Check the merchant name on your statement, then use the matching path below.

Cancel Audible on audible.com

  1. Sign in at audible.com with the account that receives membership emails.

  2. Select your name (or the mobile web menu), then Membership details. Check that this is the account with the active plan.
  3. Select Cancel membership, then continue through any retention screens until you confirm.

  4. Save the confirmation and note when benefits end — access normally continues through the paid period.

Cancel Audible billed by Apple or Google

Check the receipt and membership billing record. Apple- or Google-billed memberships must be canceled in that store; using the Audible app alone does not establish who bills you.

Deleting the Audible app cancels nothing. Save the store confirmation with the end date.

Pause instead of canceling

Audible’s September 2026 pause help allows eligible monthly memberships a total of ninety days per twelve-month allowance, divided across up to three pauses. Annual plans are ineligible. Use Membership details → Pause membership and read the start, restart and eligibility shown for your plan.

A promotional discount continues running during a pause; it is not extended. A trial pause has separate eligibility. Store-billed pauses also use store-specific instructions, so do not assume the direct-account option fits every purchase.

A pause restarts billing automatically. If leaving permanently, complete cancellation and save that result instead. Check whether books are owned purchases or plan benefits before relying on pause to preserve listening access.

What happens after you cancel

  • No automatic refund of fees already paid — Audible’s Conditions of Use state cancellation does not refund paid fees by default
  • Purchased audiobooks remain — licenses for bought titles generally continue; member-only benefits do not
  • Credit origin matters: direct unused Premium credits are lost at membership end; App Store and Google Play membership credits do not expire and remain. Included-catalog access ends with benefits. Check the individual credit record before canceling.
  • Account stays — canceling membership is not the same as deleting your Audible/Amazon login
  • Check subsequent payments against the actual cancellation date, billing period, seller and any separate subscription.

Still being charged after canceling Audible?

  • Earlier authorization or another product: match the receipt, authorization date and covered period. Access through the paid end date does not itself authorize another renewal.
  • Wrong cancel channel — you canceled on audible.com while Apple or Google still owns billing
  • Wrong Amazon account — membership lives on a different email than the one you canceled
  • Pause ended — a paused membership can resume billing on its schedule
  • Household / shared payment — another account on the payment method still holds Audible

Special cases

  • Death of the account holder: cancel at the correct biller, then use the executor checklist
  • Amazon Household / shared payment: confirm which account owns the membership before canceling
  • Free trial / promo conversion: cancel before the conversion date if you do not want the first paid charge
  • Credits mid-cancel: spend usable credits before the membership end date if you still want those titles
  • Related Amazon billing: Prime is a separate product — see cancel Amazon Prime

Purchased books, catalog downloads and Standard listens

A book bought with a credit or money stays available in your Library after cancellation under Audible’s stated purchase rules. Downloading a book included with membership does not turn it into a purchase; included titles become locked when that benefit ends.

Check each title’s purchase record before leaving. A Standard monthly listen is a membership benefit rather than a Premium credit purchase. Audible’s current pause help says Standard monthly listens lock during a pause while cash-purchased books remain playable. Identify the plan name and ask support about its cancellation access if the Library status is unclear.

For credits, record where they came from and any expiry before making a decision. Redeeming a direct credit for a book you want is different from merely downloading an included title. A saved Library item alone does not prove ownership.

Missing cancellation option or confirmation?

Open Membership details using the email on the receipt. Audible’s help says a missing cancel control can mean a different or duplicate account. Check the billing seller before trying another login; do not create a new membership to troubleshoot an existing one.

Keep the changed membership status as well as any email confirmation. If the email is missing, ask support to confirm the completed request and last benefit date. A missing message alone is not proof that cancellation failed.

Keep proof and handle special cases

For Audible, note whether the membership was bought directly or through an app store, and record the credit type before canceling. Keep a list of purchased titles separately from included catalog titles. Save the membership end date and the seller’s confirmation so a later loss of included listening is not mistaken for a missing purchase.

For an unexplained Audible charge, identify the membership, title purchase or other product on its receipt first. Send the responsible seller your cancellation record and ask which period or purchase the payment covers. Ask separately about any approved refund and its posting date; ending membership does not by itself reverse an earlier audiobook purchase.

If an Audible subscriber has died, the authorized representative should ask the billing seller how to end the membership and what evidence is required. Request a billing outcome without assuming that library access can be transferred. Track the seller, end date and any remaining request in the estate cancellation checklist.

Cancellation and billing follow-up template

Complete the cancellation in the correct account first. Copy this wording into the official support channel for missing confirmation or a disputed charge; sending a letter alone does not replace the account flow. Keep the case reference, and omit passwords, security codes and full payment-card details.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I cancel a direct Audible membership?

Open Membership details on audible.com, select Cancel membership and Confirm cancellation. Save the changed membership status.

Do Apple or Google membership credits disappear?

Audible’s current cancellation help says those credits do not expire and remain after cancellation. Direct unused Premium credits have different rules.

Does downloading an included book make it mine?

No. Included-catalog titles lock when the relevant benefit ends; a title purchased with a credit or money is different.

Can an annual membership pause?

Audible’s current pause help says annual plans are ineligible. Review cancellation and credit records before leaving.

Can I divide a monthly pause into shorter breaks?

Eligible monthly members can use up to three pauses totaling ninety days in the twelve-month allowance. Verify the available option and restart date.

Does a pause extend promotional pricing?

No. Audible says the reduced-price promotional period keeps running while paused. Check the price when billing resumes.

What if the cancel control is missing?

Confirm the active account and billing owner. Audible says duplicate accounts can explain the missing control; store billing needs its store’s cancellation.

Does Prime cancellation end Audible?

Treat them as separate subscriptions. Review the Audible membership and purchasing account directly rather than relying on a Prime cancellation.
