Send Freedom Debt Relief your termination notice through the accepted channel in your agreement or authenticated client account. Request the effective date, itemized fees, pending payments and return of the remaining dedicated-account balance. Canceling the program does not erase creditor debts or finish unpaid settlement installments.
Before you start
- Download the signed agreement, account ledger and creditor settlement schedules.
- Separate pending offers, unpaid installments and fully paid settlements.
- Submit program termination and confirm future deposits separately.
- Review the closing balance; it is not necessarily everything ever deposited.
Identify the route and completion evidence
| Item | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Program | Termination and ended authorizations |
| Dedicated account | Balance and pending transfers |
| Creditor | Remaining installment obligations |
- Save the agreement and latest program and dedicated-account statements.
- Send termination through the accepted channel and retain delivery evidence.
- Confirm the next deposit, pending creditor payments and effective cancellation date.
- Arrange remaining settlement payments directly with the verified creditor where needed.
- Reconcile fees and the returned balance, then retain both closure confirmations.
Stopping a bank transfer is not the same as ending the program. An approved settlement may still require installments after cancellation; check the creditor agreement before stopping those payments.
Collect the records before canceling
Download your enrollment agreement, dedicated-account statement, fee history and each creditor’s settlement agreement. Make a list of debts that are still negotiating, settlements with payments remaining, and settlements fully paid. Those categories determine what you still need to manage.
Use the contact details in your authenticated dashboard or the company’s official contact page. Ask for the cancellation process and keep the representative’s name, date and reference number.
Send the notice and check the next deposit
State clearly that you are terminating the program. Ask FDR to confirm the effective date, upcoming transfers and how the account administrator will return the balance. Follow the prescribed notice process and save a copy.
FDR’s FAQ says it needs notice at least three business days before a scheduled electronic transfer to cancel the next dedicated-account deposit. A last-minute request may therefore need separate follow-up. Check FDR’s current FAQ and ask whether a transfer is already processing.
Your federal dedicated-account protections
For debt-relief arrangements covered by the FTC’s Telemarketing Sales Rule, the consumer owns the dedicated-account funds and can withdraw from the service without penalty. Remaining funds must be returned within seven business days of the withdrawal request, apart from fees lawfully earned under the rule. Coverage includes many for-profit debt-relief services sold through interstate telemarketing; exceptions exist.
A contract does not override applicable consumer law. If a fee or refund restriction conflicts with these protections, ask the company to explain its legal basis. The FTC’s guide explains coverage and dedicated accounts.
Check fees against actual settlement progress
Under the covered federal rule, a provider’s settlement fee requires a debt to have been resolved or changed, the consumer’s agreement with the creditor, and at least one payment under that agreement. A negotiated offer by itself is insufficient. This is different from saying the entire settlement must already be paid.
FDR also describes separate account-administration charges and a program guarantee in its FAQ. Ask for the applicable terms and any fee refund due under that guarantee. Do not assume every historical fee is either automatically refundable or beyond dispute.
Keep installment settlements from falling through the gap
For each settlement with money still due, obtain the remaining payment schedule, creditor contact details and instructions for continuing payments after leaving. Verify arrangements directly through a trusted creditor channel. Missing an installment may affect the settlement under its terms.
For unresolved accounts, decide how you will respond to collectors and future bills. If bankruptcy is under consideration, consult bankruptcy counsel before moving money or making selective creditor payments. Do not use cancellation as a reason to miss a court deadline.
Verify the return and resolve discrepancies
Compare total deposits with creditor payments, fees, withdrawals and the closing balance. Keep the program cancellation and account closure confirmations separately. Follow up with both FDR and the dedicated-account administrator if the accounting or transfer is unclear.
If a dispute remains, provide the dated notice and statements through the CFPB complaint process or your state consumer-protection office. Keep a separate record of the specific charge or delayed return you are disputing.
Map the debts before authorizations end
FDR’s current FAQ says termination ends its authority to act for you. Build a handoff list before that point: creditor, accepted settlement, installment dates, payment route and contact details. Ask for copies of documents stored only in the dashboard so you are not depending on continued portal access.
Do not classify a settlement as complete merely because an offer was approved. Request the amount already paid, amount still due and the creditor’s acknowledgment. For unresolved debts, note collection notices and court deadlines separately from the program’s status.
When a payment is close to its due date, verify whether it is already scheduled or processing before making a replacement payment. Use the creditor’s official contact to confirm a new payment route. Keep the acknowledgment with the original settlement so a later representative can trace the change.
Create an itemized exit calculation
Build a reconciliation from total deposits to creditor disbursements, program fees, bank or processor fees, withdrawals and the final balance. Request explanations for transactions marked pending and identify whether they will change the quoted return. A dashboard savings figure is not a closing account statement.
For illustration, $3,000 in deposits minus $1,300 paid to creditors and $300 in valid fees leaves $1,400 before other entries. The example is arithmetic, not a promise about FDR fees or refunds. Match each actual debit to a statement and challenge any entry that cannot be explained.
FDR advertises a program guarantee with specific settlement-cost conditions. Ask for the guarantee applicable to your enrollment and its calculation if a fee refund is claimed. Cancellation does not establish that every amount deposited is refundable or that every fee is beyond review.
If a deposit or creditor payment appears after notice
Compare the initiation date, scheduled date, termination receipt and posted date. A transfer already processing may appear after the notice even though future authorizations were canceled. Ask the responsible team whether it is a deposit, creditor installment, earned fee or error before requesting a remedy.
A bank transfer dispute and a program termination are separate tasks. Give the bank the specific transaction and evidence if you dispute it, and follow the bank’s actual procedure and deadline. Do not describe a previously authorized transfer as unauthorized solely because you later decided to leave.
If the company or administrator promises a correction, obtain its reference, amount and expected posting date. Verify the actual account entry afterward. A promise to refund and a posted refund are different completion records.
Choose a next step for unpaid debts
For each creditor still unpaid, record a practical next action rather than leaving the account marked simply canceled. Ask about a hardship plan, review nonprofit counseling, or get legal advice where the debt or a court claim is disputed. Compare the payment amounts and total costs of alternatives before committing.
Keep settlement agreements and creditor completion evidence for tax preparation. IRS Topic 431 discusses canceled-debt income and possible exceptions and exclusions. Leaving FDR does not undo a completed debt cancellation, and receiving or not receiving a particular tax form does not by itself settle the tax question.
If bankruptcy may be appropriate, consult counsel before withdrawing funds or making selective payments. Take your dedicated-account ledger and remaining settlement obligations. Preserve any court response date while the program exit or a complaint is being reviewed.
Request and follow-up template
Adapt this letter to the actual request. Use the official channel and any required form; the wording does not replace legal authority, a creditor agreement or the provider’s verification. Include only the information needed for the case and send sensitive evidence securely.
Frequently asked questions
Does canceling erase the creditor debts?
No. Inventory unresolved accounts and installments separately and arrange the next step with the verified creditor.
Is an accepted settlement already fully paid?
Not necessarily. Obtain its payment schedule and completion evidence; installments may remain.
Do I receive everything I ever deposited?
Not automatically. Compare creditor disbursements, valid charges, withdrawals and the remaining balance in an itemized ledger.
Does stopping my bank deposit end the program?
Treat these as separate tasks. Send termination and confirm the future transfer and pending-payment status.
Can a fee be earned before the last installment?
Yes, depending on the applicable rule and agreement. Check the creditor agreement, customer approval and payment evidence instead of assuming final payment is required.
Can I ignore creditor or court notices after cancellation?
No. Program termination does not suspend collection, court or settlement deadlines.
What if the closing amount is wrong?
Identify the specific entry, send the notice and supporting statements, and request a corrected accounting and decision.
Should I move the account money before bankruptcy?
Get bankruptcy advice before moving funds or making selective creditor payments; the appropriate handling depends on the case.
