How to Cancel DIRECTV: Service, Fees and Equipment

Cancel DIRECTV using your exact product and account route. Check contract fees, product-specific equipment returns, final billing and written confirmation.

Quick answer

Use the product name on your bill: satellite, DIRECTV via Internet or DIRECTV STREAM. DIRECTV’s cancel page offers an online Cancel service route for internet service and phone help for personalized cancellation. Refund, commitment and equipment rules depend on the exact product and agreement; save the end date and a device-specific return list.

Before you cancel DIRECTV

  • Read the product name on the bill: satellite, DIRECTV via Internet or DIRECTV STREAM. Internet delivery alone does not identify every contract rule.
  • Check the 14-day clock if you’re new: STREAM’s full-refund window runs from purchase, and the trial has its own rule
  • Inventory devices and identify leased, included, purchased and installment equipment. Ask which must return and by what deadline.
  • Know your contract: month-to-month STREAM cancels clean; 24-month commitments (satellite or STREAM) carry the prorated ETF

A dish or internet connection is a useful starting clue, but it is not a complete product identifier. Read the bill and order agreement for satellite, DIRECTV via Internet or DIRECTV STREAM, then use that product’s cancellation and device instructions.

Which DIRECTV do you have?

Bill or agreement saysCancellation starting pointMoney and equipment
SatelliteOfficial phone or supported contact routeSatellite agreement and a named leased-device return list
DIRECTV via InternetAccount Cancel service option or supportIts order, commitment and device terms
DIRECTV STREAMAccount cancellation flow for the ownerSTREAM policy, including eligible purchase/refund and device conditions

A no-dish service is not automatically proof that every STREAM device rule applies. Read the product name and device purchase or lease record. Ask which policy covers your actual order.

within 14 days or $120 fee
  1. Sign in as the account owner at your DIRECTV account overview — the cancel path lives behind the owner login, not a household profile.

  2. Open “Manage my TV Subscription” and choose “Cancel my subscription.” Follow the prompts to the end; an abandoned flow is not a cancellation.

  3. Note the effective date: service continues through the end of your monthly billing cycle — that’s expected, not a failed cancel.

  4. Save the confirmation (screen and email) with the date you canceled; it anchors the 14-day device-return clock and any refund argument.

  5. Box the device the same week. Ship it with the included USPS return label; no label? Call 800.531.5000 to get one. Fourteen days from cancellation is the deadline before the $120 non-return fee applies.

Keep the requests separate.

Stopping future renewal does not prove that every existing order, service, device or refund was resolved. Save the completed request and the specific effective dates.

The STREAM money rules, straight from the policy

  • 14-day full refund: cancel within 14 days of purchase for a full refund of fees and charges paid. After day 14, no refund or credit for partial months or unwatched content — the cycle you’re in is the one you paid for.
  • Free trial: cancel inside the trial and you owe nothing. Cancel after it converts and you’re charged for the next 30 days — the trial’s end date is the deadline that matters, so calendar it the day you sign up.
  • The $120 device fee: the STREAM device included with service must be returned within 14 days of cancellation, undamaged beyond normal wear, or $120 hits the payment method on the account. This is the single most disputed charge in the process — ship early, keep the tracking number.
  • Purchased devices: bought-out devices refund in full if returned within 14 days of purchase; devices on an installment plan that aren’t returned (or come back damaged) get charged at the outstanding balance per the installment agreement.
  • 2-year contract ETF: STREAM plans bought with a 24-month commitment carry an early-termination fee if you disconnect more than 14 days after purchase inside the term — maximum $480, prorated at $20 per month remaining. The later you leave, the smaller it gets.

Canceling satellite DIRECTV by phone

  1. Call 800.531.5000 — DIRECTV’s stated line for personalized cancellation (and the pause line for dish accounts). Reason-based chat routes exist for content, technical troubles, and cost; the cost route doubles as a “review my package for better value” conversation if you’re open to staying.

  2. Have the account in front of you: account number, service address, and your contract’s end date. Ask the rep to read the ETF calculation with the clause cited before you confirm any date.

  3. State the decision once: “I’m canceling my satellite service effective [date].” Retention offers will follow — declines are complete sentences.

  4. Get the equipment return instructions on the call: what goes back, how (label, drop-off, pickup), and the deadline. Photograph serial numbers before boxing.

  5. Write down the confirmation number and rep name, and confirm the written cancellation notice is coming.

Pause or move: check the actual agreement

The current cancellation page describes pausing or suspension without a charge, but verify eligibility and the actual terms for your product. Ask about restart date, remaining device installments and whether a commitment end date changes. Save the account result; a pause is temporary.

Special cases and exceptions

  • Trial about to convert: cancel inside the trial window online (STREAM) — after conversion you owe 30 days, so the last free day is the one to act on.
  • Service failures as leverage: the technical-troubles chat route exists for cancellation over outages and defects; documented ticket history turns “I want out” into a waiver conversation on ETFs and final bills.
  • Death of the account holder: the executor cancels with proof of authority; equipment return and final billing follow the same paths — the executor’s checklist has the document kit.
  • Multiple rooms / receivers: one account cancels as a unit; confirm every receiver and device is on the return list so nothing bills as unreturned gear.
  • Bundled with another provider: if DIRECTV arrived through a bundle (internet or mobile promo), canceling can reprice the remaining services — check the bundle terms before pulling the trigger.

After you cancel: the verification pass

  • Same day: confirmation saved; device boxed with tracking number (STREAM)
  • End of cycle: service ends; access stopping is expected
  • After the applicable return deadline, confirm the account acknowledges each device and check for non-return or installment charges. Use the product’s actual deadline, not a generic day count.
  • Final bill: compare service dates, commitment calculation, device charges and credits with the written records. Ask support to review a mismatch, then ask your payment provider promptly about any unresolved dispute.

Make a device return record before packing

Ask for each required device’s model, serial number, return route and deadline in writing. Distinguish an included or leased receiver from a purchased device and an installment balance. Do not send equipment to an address guessed from another product’s guide.

Photograph each serial number and the packed contents. Keep the carrier acceptance receipt, tracking and confirmation of delivery. Delivery to a warehouse does not prove the account matched every device; check the account’s received-device record before discarding evidence.

If the instructions are missing or a label fails, contact support before the deadline and retain the case reference. Ask for replacement instructions and how the issue affects timing. Do not assume contacting support automatically extends the deadline.

Read the final bill by charge type

LineEvidence to compare
Service through the effective endBilling-cycle dates and cancellation confirmation
Early terminationCommitment end, remaining months and applicable formula
Non-return chargeRequired serials, acceptance tracking and account receipt
Purchased-device balanceRetail installment terms and prior payments
Credit or refundWritten amount and expected posting date

For an eligible contract using twenty dollars per remaining month, six remaining months would produce one hundred twenty dollars by that formula. This is arithmetic only: verify your product’s actual agreement, remaining term and exceptions before treating it as a quote.

Four causes of a later payment

  • The final service cycle was billed before the cancellation became effective.
  • The request or retention conversation never reached confirmed cancellation.
  • A return was late, unmatched or incomplete in the account record.
  • A device installment, another service or a bundle remains separately due.

Send support the relevant line, confirmation, agreement and return evidence. Ask for an itemized decision rather than disputing the whole balance without identifying the error. Retain receipts while the review is open and ask the payment provider promptly about its procedure and deadline.

Cancellation and billing follow-up template

Complete the cancellation in the correct account first. Copy this wording into the official support channel for missing confirmation or a disputed charge; sending a letter alone does not replace the account flow. Keep the case reference, and omit passwords, security codes and full payment-card details.

Cancel DirecTV: frequently asked questions

Is every no-dish plan DIRECTV STREAM?

Read the product name on the bill and agreement. DIRECTV via Internet and DIRECTV STREAM can have different commitment and device records.

Where do I start cancellation?

Use DIRECTV’s official cancel page. It offers an account Cancel service option for internet delivery and phone help for personalized cancellation. Keep the final confirmation.

Does the STREAM refund window cover every DIRECTV plan?

No. Apply the STREAM policy only to the relevant product and purchase. Check the actual agreement and order date before requesting a refund.

Where do I get a missing STREAM return label?

The published STREAM policy lists 800.531.5000 for requesting a missing label. Verify the return instructions for your particular equipment.

Do all devices have one return deadline?

No. Record the product, whether the device is leased or purchased, and its specific return deadline and route.

What evidence proves equipment was returned?

Keep serial-number photos, the carrier acceptance receipt, tracking and account acknowledgment. Delivery alone may not identify each received device.

Is pausing permanent cancellation?

No. Confirm eligibility, restart date, device payments and commitment consequences before accepting a temporary hold.

Why might a final payment remain?

Check the final service cycle, incomplete cancellation, unmatched equipment and separate installment or bundle obligations. Ask for an itemized explanation against your records.
